LEVEL 5 contains BOTH the dorsal and ventral hippocampus in the same P20 rat.  The slice of the ventral hippocampus only contains a wide swath of the granular layer and the hilus—not Ammon’s horn.

The dorsal dentate gyrus has the same labeling pattern as seen in more medial levels.  Notice the big growth spurt in the dentate gyrus between P10 and P20.

It is striking that the ventral hippocampus at P20 is very similar in appearance to the ventral hippocampus at P10.  There are practically no labeled granule cells.  Unlike the septal extreme (L1) very few postnatally generated granule cells are present at this level.  This part of the hippocampus appears morphologically mature at P10.
