LEVEL 7 is a more lateral slice of the dorsal and ventral hippocampus in the same P10 rat.  The only difference between this level and L6 is that the dorsal and ventral parts of the hippocampus are getting closer together while the thalamus, subthalamus and the midbrain tegmentum are getting smaller.

In the dorsal hippocampus, the external limb of the granular layer is longer than the internal limb.   The entire granular layer contains a continuous deep layer of labeled cells from one end to the other.  The older external to younger internal neurogenetic gradient in the granular layer is not there.

The ventral hippocampus shows a short internal limb for the first time.  Many labeled cells are present there.  There is a prominent neurogenetic gradient between the external limb (more unlabeled cells) and the internal limb (fewer unlabeled cells) of the granular layer—the same pattern that is shown in the septal extreme.  Just as in L6, there are fewer small labeled cells in the ventral hilus than in the dorsal hilus.
