In the same P10 rat, LEVEL 12 is the farthest lateral slice of the hippocampus that contains the dentate gyrus.  Fields CA3-4 are not there.  Dorsal and ventral fields CA1 are fused and surround the anterior part of the dentate gyrus.  The subiculum is fused posterior to the dentate gyrus.  The striatum, amygdala, perirhinal cortex, and entorhinal cortex encircle the hippocampus.  The dentate gyrus itself contains only a circle of the external limb of the granular layer.  The granular layer contains a continuous ring of deep labeled cells but unlabeled cells predominate.  The heavily labeled subgranular zone indicates that more granule cells are being generated and they will migrate into the deep parts of the granular layer and differentiate.
