In the same P20 rat, LEVEL 12 is the farthest lateral slice of the hippocampus that contains the dentate gyrus.  Just as for the P10 rat at Level 12, fields CA3-4 are not there; dorsal and ventral fields CA1 are fused and surround the anterior part of the dentate gyrus.  The dentate gyrus contains C-shaped slice through the external limb of the granular layer.  The granular layer contains a thick, deep layer of labeled cells that taper into thinner layers at either end.  Unlabeled cells are along the entire outer zone of the granular layer, but they are now in the minority.  There are fewer labeled cells in the subgranular zone indicating that fewer granule cells will be generated and differentiate in deep parts of the layer.
