This is a slice of the dorsal hippocampus in a 60-day-old rat that was injected with 3H-thymidine on 2 consecutive days: P12 - P13.

The number of unlabeled superficial cells throughout the DENTATE GRANULAR LAYER continues to increase but at a reduced rate (only 5-6% more neurons have been generated on P10 and P11).  As in all other injection groups, the labeled granule cells occupy the deepest part of the granular layer and were generated AFTER P12, the onset of the injections.  However, there are a few superficially-placed labeled cells in both limbs of the granular layer.  The majority of small neurons are unlabeled throughout both limbs of the dentate molecular layer, indicating that neurogenesis is nearly complete in this population.
