Figure 38 is a ventral horizontal slice of the anterior forebrain in an E15 embryo that reveals the full trajectory of mitral cell migration. The presumptive mitral cells percolate through the settling primary olfactory cortex neurons, accumulate beneath the pia and migrate forward leaving their axons behind in the lateral olfactory tract. We are below the part of the NEP that is the probable source of the AOB output neurons. Note how the spindle shaped cells round the anterior part of the brain and intermingle with large cells in the olfactory nerve contact zone. The olfactory NEP is tangentially cut, and the olfactory recess is only partly within the slice.
